Centre for Language, Literacy and Communication (CLLC)

Established in 2007 with support from the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, the Centre for Language, Literacy and Communication (CLLC) at Pragat Shikshan Sanstha focused on strengthening Marathi and English learning at the elementary level. Under the leadership of Dr. Maxine Berntsen, Dr. Manjiri Nimbkar, and Jane Sahi, the centre developed innovative programs in early literacy, teacher capacity building, and language pedagogy. The Everyday English series, developed in collaboration with government schools, made English accessible to thousands of rural children and teachers. CLLC also supported teacher fellowships,
translation of key books in education, and extensive research on multilingual classrooms. Through workshops, national seminars, and film resources like Bhashet Nhaun Nightana and Here is a Tree, the centre fostered public dialogue on language education. CLLC demonstrated that real educational change begins in classrooms—with teachers, local languages, and sustained reflection—and continues to inspire educators across India.
